Objectives

Development and inter-comparison of algorithms for validating the radiometry of Sentinel-2 Level-1 products.

Abstract

According to the definition used by the Working Group on Calibration and Validation (WGCV) of the international Committee on Earth Observation Satellites (CEOS), validation is the process of assessing, by independent means, the quality of the data products derived from the system outputs. This two-year project pursues two main objectives:

  • The development of four algorithms to validate the radiometry of Sentinel-2 products.
  • The inter-comparison of the results obtained with these methods and the ones from other entities.

Results

Project kick-off on the 31st of March 2016 with a duration of two years.

The S2RadVal project shall allow the definition, implementation and validation of several Sentinel-2 radiometric validation methods and their associated uncertainties budgets following QA4EO and GUM guideline:

  • Sentinel-2 radiometry validation method based on Deep Convective Clouds (DCC) observations
  • Sentinel-2 radiometry validation method based on the use of RadCalNet measurements
  • Sentinel-2 low/medium radiometry validation
  • Sentinel-3 radiometry validation using RadCalNet and Sentinel-2
