Sentinel-3 Performance Improvement for ICE Sheets

Project References
Acronym SPICE
Full title Sentinel-3 Performance Improvement for ICE Sheets
Cost 150 k €
Action line R&D Studies for Advanced Methods
Missions Sentinel 3
Project Description
Objectives The project aims to test and implement improved or novel algorithms and techniques, in order to optimise and evaluate processing of Sentinel-3 SAR mode data over ice sheets. The study will deliver important new scientific results and establish a solid methodological basis for the development of a new era of operational SAR altimetry over the polar ice sheets.
Abstract

Current SAR altimeter processing techniques have principally been optimised and evaluated for water and sea ice surfaces. This leaves several outstanding issues related to the development of SAR processing algorithms for ice sheets to be addressed that are the objective of this study. These are enumerated below:

  • the improvement of the waveform retracking procedures required to estimate surface elevation from the detected echo
  • the improvement of delay-doppler processing
  • the assessment of higher level SAR altimetry products over ice sheets
  • and the interaction of the radar wave with snowpack.
